Chapter Ten

Sitting inside the cab, Bryce glanced at the screen of his phone. His brows tugged together at the text message from Lucy. One of their rules was no texting unless it was a sexy selfie of Lucy or a message in the form of a song. She sent him a curious one, Pieces by Red.

He pulled up the song, stuck his earbuds in, and listened to the lyrics. The longer he listened, the more worried he became. What kind of message was his girl sending him? He realized everyone brought their own history and baggage into a relationship.

What had she meant by this song, the lyrics speaking of being lost, of coming to him in pieces, of wanting him to complete her? He took the earbuds out and shoved them into his backpack. They had some serious talking to do.

“We’re here.”

The cab pulled alongside a one-story, stucco-looking house. He paid the driver, got out, and stormed to the front door. He raised his fist, ready to pound on the door. The door opened and he hit nothing but air.

A guy his height, but packed with muscles, stood on the other side of the door with a smug grin on his face. He extended his hand to Bryce.

“You must be Bryce Morgan, Lucy’s guy?”

Bryce didn’t shake the man’s hand. “Yeah, that’s me. Where is she?”

And what the hell are you doing here? That’s what he wanted to ask, but he’d rather get the explanation from Lucy.

The guy let his hand fall to hang at his side. “She’s swimming laps in the pool out back. Apparently, your girl can’t resist the water.” The smug widened. “Maybe she’s tired of the rain and misses the sun, yeah?”

Yeah... no. Lucy loved the rain. She never once told him she missed home, that she regretted moving from sunny Palm Springs to the dreary grays of the Pacific Northwest.

Bryce barged past Tristan. He dropped his backpack on the couch and hurried for the sliding glass door.

He’d never seen Lucy in a swimsuit before. Was she a one piece or bikini kind of gal? He smiled at seeing her again, though they’d only been apart for a few hours. Fourteen to be exact, but who’s counting?

With lightness to his step at seeing his woman again, he headed outside through the sliding glass door. She seemed oblivious to him as she swam with her face in the water. On her lap back toward the house, she lifted her head to the side, as though gulping air, and must’ve seen him. She stopped and threaded water.

“Bryce, you’re early.”

“Plane left early.” He stepped closer to the pool. “Hi, darling.”

A smile spanned her face. Damn those full red lips, and the deep grooves in her cheeks. He groaned and upped his pace, drawn by how beautiful she looked with her wet hair and drops of water dotting her long lashes and naturally golden skin.

She swam over and crossed her arms on the edge of the pool. “I missed you.”

Call him
